Water Skiing – So Many Different Types

Water Skiing is an interesting recreational sport in which the skier or participant is pulled behind a fast-moving powerboat via a very strong and tight ski rope over a water body such as a river, lake, or ocean.

The Different Types of Water Skiing include:

1. Slalom Skiing

Slalom skiing is a type of water skiing in which the skier stays uses only one ski instead of two. The type of water ski used in slalom is specially designed with two plates, front boot, a rear boot, and an open binding.

In slalom competition, a course is set up with six or more buoys in a straight line. Each skier is supposed to navigate in between the buoys as he or she is being pulled by the powerboat. The skiers perform at very high speeds of up to about 60 kilometres per hour. The score of each skier is determined by the number of buoys cleared successfully, the length of the rope, and the speed of the powerboat. Slalom is considered to be a form of exercise. This is due to the fact that the skier usually trains his core muscles through numerous isometric contractions. It plays a very major role in improving the agility and flexibility of the skiers.

2. Barefoot Skiing

Barefoot skiing is a type of water skiing in which a skier goes skiing without putting on a water ski. As compared to other types of water skiing, barefoot skiing requires the skier to ski at a very high speed of about 45 mph.

Instead of putting on a life jacket, barefoot skiers usually put on a special wetsuit that covers a good percentage of the body. The wetsuit is thicker around the chest and the back for impact absorption and flotation.

Another important tool commonly used by barefoot skiers is the barefoot boom, a strong aluminium bar that is attached to the edge of the powerboat. The skier holds on the boom and skis alongside the boat.This allows the skier to be very close to his or her guides who are inside the boat, providing a very excellent teaching and guiding platform.

In most cases, the beginners of barefoot skiing wear shoe skis during training. The shoe skis help in speed reduction and reduce the risk of foot injuries that might be caused by choppy water.

3. Show Skiing


In show skiing, the skiers ski while performing extraordinary tricks on water The tricks, which are almost the same as those usually performed by gymnasts can either be simple or hard, depending on the skills and experience of the skier.

Show skiing is commonly performed on special events like the water ski shows. The events are made livelier by the involvement of music, choreographers, and commentators. Different show teams often meet for regional or international completions in different countries around the world, especially in the American, Australian, and European continents. The show can either be performed by a single skier or a group of skiers dressed in safe and elaborate costumes. Some of the main acts that are usually displayed by show skiers include freestyle jumping, swivel skiing, ski doubles, and pyramids.
